Planten hebben een transportsysteem om dingen te verplaatsen.
Het xyleem verplaatst water en opgeloste stoffen, van de wortels naar de bladeren in een proces dat bekend staat als transpiratie.
Het floëem verplaatst glucose en aminozuren van de bladeren rondom de plant, in een proces dat bekend staat als translocatie.
Het xyleem en floëem zijn gerangschikt in groepen die vaatbundels worden genoemd. De opstelling is iets anders in de wortels dan de stengels. Het xyleem bestaat uit dode cellen, terwijl het floëem bestaat uit levende cellen.
