Die Bilder, die die Erde von der D1-Mission im Weltall erreichten, sind auch heute noch spektakulär. Vor 25 Jahren startete die erste deutsche Mission am 30. Oktober vom amerikanischen Cape Canaveral. An Bord des Space Shuttles Challenger: das europäische Forschungslabor Spacelab -- von außen eine überdimensionierte Tonne, innen mit Technik vollgestopft -- und die Astronauten Ernst Messerschmid, Reinhard Furrer und Wubbo Ockels, die in der Schwerelosigkeit fast 80 Experimente durchführen sollten.
