Heutzutage landen immer mehr Tiere auf der Straße, wo sie sich vermehren und noch mehr heimatlose Tiere verursachen. Der Mensch muss den Bedürfnissen der Haustiere nach Liebe, Nahrung, Wasser, tierärztlicher Versorgung, Unterkunft, Pflege und Sicherheit gerecht werden. Der Internationale Tag der heimatlosen Tiere findet jeden dritten Samstag im August statt. Ziel ist es, das Bewusstsein für die Überpopulation von Haustieren zu schärfen.
