Les equacions s'utilitzen a tot arreu: a ordinadors, negocis, cerques per Internet, medicina, etcètera, per això els estudiem molt en les matemàtiques.
Hi ha noms per a descriure les parts: coeficients, variables, constants i exponents. Una variable és un símbol d'un número que encara no coneixem. Acostuma a ser una lletra. Un nombre per si sol es diu constant.
Són diferents als nombres que hi ha davant les variables: es denominen coeficients. Són diferents a les constants, perquè els coeficients sempre es multipliquen per una variable. Un nombre i una lletra és un coeficient i una variable. Però un nombre per si sol és una constant. Si una variable no té un coeficient davant, significa que el coeficient és 1.
Però en àlgebra no escrivim l'1: "a" en lloc de "1". A vegades fins i tot pot haver-hi lletres per a representar coeficients: ax + by. Els exponents ens diuen les vegades hem de multiplicar el valor per si mateix. L'exponent té noms diferents: exponent, índex, potència.
