In this video we look at the basics of algebra, focusing on the notation that is used.
In algebra we use symbols to represent numbers. These symbols are called variables. Some reasons for using symbols instead of numbers is that the symbols, or variables, can represent unknown quantities and for showing formulae like the area of a circle.
Instead of writing a X b we remove the multiplication sign and just write ab instead. Two letters next to each other or a number and a letter, means those things are multiplied together.
We use a curly x for the letter because otherwise it looks like a multiplication sign.
Instead of the division sign, in algebra we usually write it as a fraction. Numbers are usually left as fractions rather than as decimals.
